'White Privilege Is A Myth' - Intersectionality & Privilege Debate
The other day someone shared the photo above on my Facebook and asked for people’s opinions on it. After reading through some of the comments I found one gentlemen who I feel handled the ‘discussion/debate’ in a rather emotional way without really justifying his points so I rebutted and challenged his perspective.
Here is how that went:
Now I’ve noticed this A LOT in society and on Facebook where two opposing views on a subject come together there isn’t a real ‘discussion or debate’. It’s more of an interaction between to beings, they exchange ideas they haven’t fully formulated themselves, they don’t really rebuttal each other’s points, they just pour out their emotional angst and try to direct the conversation into a way that gives them the ‘moral highground’.
As you can see from the photos above and the video below, I rebutted and challenged his points. I laid out simple and basic questions for him to answer and he continually avoided these and many points that challenged his perspective.
What you may also notice is that this person HEAVILY contradicts themselves and I believe this is because their viewpoints are formulated by others, not of their own. You can see from the third photo that he says ‘you should look at yourself not others’ and then by the ninth photo, in an attempt to justify his weak logic he claims ‘you’re so focused on the individual that you’re not looking at the system…. the system is the problem’.
So I don’t understand here, do I look at myself, the individual? Or do I look at the ‘system’?
I repeatedly asked him how someone looking at themselves and not looking at others in a judgemental prejudicial light, would in anyway be able to classify and label another human being by their outward appearance which he completely avoided.
Personally I believe he is part of the system that is the problem.
He’s willing to completely disregard and avoid any points/questions that challenge his perspective and is even willing to contradict himself in order to justify his illogical reasoning. There is no thought process going on. There is no conversation happening here. This person is extremely close-minded and has a narrative for the world that they want to so badly to be true that they willingly put blinders on to keep it true.
He also claims that the ‘individual is perfect’ and it’s the social construct that is the problem. By this definition one cannot change, one cannot improve, one cannot get better and be better so why even try to change? How could perfect individuals construct a ‘flawed’ system?
I personally believe this gentlemen HEAVILY believes that he is ‘perfect’ and he doesn’t need to change his opinions/perspectives on this subject (or any for that matter) because as a ‘perfect individual’ any challenges, suffering, strife, problems, issues in life he aren’t truly his (or the individual) it’s the systems fault and the system should change, not the individual….
