Mastery
Posted on my Facebook: June 25th, 2015
Three years ago today was my last time 6850' underground using my hands and million dollar pieces of equipment to extract granite core samples from thousands of feet in different directions in search of gold veins hidden within the rock. I never want to go back. Fuck that.
I don't believe we were meant to have one 'career' or job. I believe with the growth of knowledge and communication amongst the world (and the future of travel) we are entering the 'new renissance' and we should be training coming generations to be polymaths.
I'm a big fan of Benjamin Franklin, this guy wasn't just an inventor like some of us may think, he was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. But he wasn't just born this way, he wasn't born more special than you or I. He is just another human being on this planet, so why does he and others like Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Mozart and Leonardo DaVinci appear almost genius like and on another level? It's because they are. They have achieved Mastery within their life.
If you are interested in what I am discussing here then I really suggest buying Mastery by Robert Greene. Once I finished this book I knew I had to quit my job to fulfill my life task. At the time of leaving a 6 figure salary at the age of 22 with no hope in the world of what my life task was; I knew that what I was doing with my life at the time was toxic, both to my health and my mentality. This book describes with great detail using many great polymaths from the past that we as human beings in life all have a life task. We are meant to do and achieve something great but it's not going to be easy. You have to struggle, you have to learn, you have to take on an 'apprenticeship' where you learn and develop skills in a field for SEVERAL YEARS and learn how negatives/confrontations/people in your life are really just leading you on the path to where you're supposed to be.
I believe the book and movie 'The Secret' is great for people who are stumbling upon their life task. If you are already headed down your path then The Secret keeps the fire burning, but if you (as I did myself in hopes of $ and ease) give up on your life task and passion then that will do nothing to help you at all; just hoping things are going to get better aren't. You have to be doing it.
We regularly hear about 'middle age' crisis. It's true because once you finally 'have' everything you worked for you really have nothing. Shelter is finally paid for, food is finally paid for and family is protected but you are dead inside because you gave up on your life task and your passion to get what others told you would have been right. So SOMETHING has to be wrong with my life. Must be my relationship, or my job or my assets, nope, it's because you're dead inside.
I know this was long but please people, don't die inside. Keep, rejuvenate or find whatever the hell your life task is and grab life by the balls and go for it. No one is going to help you, only you can make yourself happy. I am still stumbling upon my life task and I can say 100% that I have absolutely no idea where I will be in the next three years but, I am happy. I am happy because I have absolutely no idea what tomorrow holds for me besides the knowledge and tools that I have developed and the intentions I have for this world and my city. I hope I manage to steer this meat wagon in the right direction. Give Mastery a shot. You won't regret it.
